Feeling Anxious? Relieve Anxiety with Aromatherapy

Stressed at work? School? Finances? Perhaps you’re feeling anxious about a personal relationship or an emotional trauma. There are many situations in life that can cause us to feel anxious.  Aromatherapy can benefit us immensely by helping us cope with day to day stressors. In this post we will show you how you can utilize one of our most popular blends, plus a breathing exercise to help you relieve anxiety.

Anxiety Eternity Blend: A synergistic blend of Bergamot, Frankincense, Lavender and Ylang Ylang. There are many studies on how these ingredients can help us when our emotional state is compromised, such as during prolonged periods of stress.

A study conducted in Taiwan in 2011 provided powerful evidence on how Aromatherapy can help manage anxiety. The authors selected elementary school teachers, who are known to constantly work under significant stress, and used an inhalation of bergamot C. aurantiumvar.bergamia essential oil as the method of administration; they focused on the physiological stress signals that are easy to record and straightforward to interpret. They found that even a 10-minute-long weekly inhalation of aromatherapy resulted in a significant reduction of blood pressure and heart rate, and drove autonomic nervous activity toward a balanced state. In addition, participants with moderate and high degrees of anxiety benefited more than the light anxiety group.[x]

Inhalation of certain essential oils such as Ylang Ylang, Lavender and Bergamot can be considered an effective nursing intervention that reduces psychological stress responses and serum cortisol levels, as well as the blood pressure of clients with essential hypertension. (y)

There are also studies on the effect of lavender essential oil on anxiety level in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery as well as dental patient anxiety. (Z, A)

Take a deep breath and reconnect with yourself by using an aromatic blend that will lift your senses and bring that feeling of calm. Sometimes just taking a pause for a moment can help us focus and reconnect, therefore we become more productive.

Essential Oils 101

Essential oils are the concentrated extracts derived from different parts of the plant including:  roots, leaves, seeds, resins, barks, or flowers. These oils are highly concentrated. It can take a pound of peppermint leaves to make a drop of Peppermint Essential Oil and approximately 50 rose flowers to create just a single drop of Rose oil!

These precious oils are highly concentrated, and should never be underestimated. Even when used sparingly, they can offer immense therapeutic benefit. With Essential Oils, less is always more. A little goes a long way!

The complex chemical composition of Essential Oils is how we receive the Therapeutic benefits through inhalation and/or external application on the body.

What is a Carrier Oil?

Carrier oils are also referred to as base oils, and are a natural vegetable oil used to dilute Essential Oils in before applications on the body.

Some examples of carrier oils include:

  • Grapeseed
  • Coconut Oil
  • Almond
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Avocado
  • Cherry Kernel
  • Jojoba
  • Apricot Oil

These oils are high in a variety of nutrients such as fat soluble vitamins, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids. For the most part, carrier oils we use in aromatherapy are generally odorless with the purpose of not overpowering the aroma of the Essential Oil. Some carrier oils might have a light, nutty aroma that many find pleasant.

What is an Infused Oil?

An Infused Oil is carrier oil that has been infused with herbs. Infused oils are generally made with Extra Virgin Olive Oil as the base. The beauty of using an infused oil is that not only will it contain the properties of the Essential Oils you add to it, but you will also receive the benefits of the herbs that have been infused in it. There are some herbs that we do not have available as

Essential Oils or are very rare to find, but by using infused oils we can still receive the benefits of these botanicals.

Some examples of infused oils include:

  • Capsicum
  • Garlic
  • Plantain Leaf
  • Rose Petal
  • Whole Chamomile

ALWAYS dilute the essential oil in an oil based carrier. When using a carrier oil, essential oils will stick with the fats in these oils. You will also have the best absorption into your skin, and will avoid skin irritation. Not only that, but by blending with other oils, such as Jojoba, you will receive the nourishing skin benefits as well.

Dilution Chart – Below is a chart you can use when diluting in your favorite carrier oil.

1% Dilution
1 oz. (Carrier Oil) (30 ml) — 5 to 6 drops (EO)
2 oz. (Carrier Oil) (60 ml) — 10 to 12 drops (EO)
2% Dilution
1 oz. (Carrier Oil) (30 ml) — 10 to 12 drops (EO)2 oz. (Carrier Oil) (60 ml) — 20 to 24 drops (EO)
3% Dilution
1 oz. (Carrier Oil) (30 ml) — 15 to 18 drops (EO)
2 oz. (Carrier Oil)  (60 ml) — 30 to 36 drops (EO)
1% Dilution — Use for children (under 12) pregnant women and people with long-term illnesses or immune system disorders.
A 1% dilution is also a good place to start with individuals who are generally sensitive to chemicals, fragrances, or other environmental pollutants.
2% Dilution — Use for general wellness supporting products such as bath oils, skin care, natural perfumes, or for blends you like to use on a daily basis. 3% Dilution — Use this dilution when creating a blend to address a specific, acute health concern, such as pain relief or getting through a cold or flu.

Storing Essential Oils

Essential Oils should always be kept in a dark amber or cobalt blue class bottle. Store oils in a cool, dark place.

Essential Oil Blends

Essential Oils work better together!  Blending more than one Essential Oil is key to have a superior formula. When Essential Oils are blended properly, each of their individual properties can be greatly enhanced.

Barefūt Eternity Blends are synergistically formulated so that it takes the guess work out and you can have the convenient, ready to use formula in one bottle.

Essential Oil Safety

  • Essential Oils should never be used undiluted on the skin.
  • Do not take essential oils internally without appropriate advanced aromatherapy education and understanding of the safety issues involved in doing so.
  • Keep essential oils away from the eyes.
  • Keep all essential oils out of reach of children and pets.
  • Do not use photosensitizing essential oils prior to going into a sun tanning booth or the sun. They cause the skin to be more sensitive to sunlight (actually any ultra violet – UV – light) and one would therefore burn and damage more easily. Stay out of the sun or sun tanning booth for at least twenty-four hours after treatment if photosensitizing essential oils were applied to the skin. This is more common with the oils from the citrus family, when they are extracted by direct expression and without distillation.

Essential oils that may cause sun sensitivity:

    • Lemon verbena
    • Lime (cold pressed)
    • Mandarin
    • Tagetes
    • Tangerine (cold pressed)
    • Yuzu

  • Angelica
  • Bergamot *
  • Bitter orange (cold pressed)
  • Grapefruit (cold pressed)
  • Lemon (cold pressed as well as distilled)

* Unless it is bergaptene-free oil – sold as Bergamot FCF

  • Less is more- It takes a whole lot of plant material to extract Essential Oils. The smallest amount of Essential Oil can usually get the job done.
  • Do not take essential oils internally without appropriate advanced aromatherapy education and understanding of the safety issues involved in doing so.
  • Use only high quality oils from reputable sources.
  • Store oils in a cool, dark place.

Myrtle provides many health benefits, but one of its most common uses is Thyroid Support. “(Myrtus communis) is an adaptogen that can stimulate an increase or a decrease in thyroid activity depending on a person’s condition. Drugs are incapable of such intelligent discriminations and act only in preprogrammed directions, like robots, whether beneficial or not.” ~ Dr. David Stewart, Ph.D., D.N.M.

Spotlight: Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang “Flower of Flowers”

(Cananga odorata)

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil is distilled from the flowers of a tall tropical tree that grows in Madagascar, China, Philippines, Indonesia and reunion islands. The name Ylang Ylang means “flowers of flowers”.

Ylang Ylang is a beautifying oil. It is great for all skin types as it regulates sebum production in both mature and youthful skin. It is also known to promote growth of fuller more luxurious hair. In Hawaii, Ylang Ylang is blended with coconut oil to create a mixture called “borriborri” which is massaged over the body for its aroma and protective abilities. The women also use it to protect their hair.

Its aroma is captivating, euphoric and sensual. It beautifully relaxes the body and mind, opens or “expands” the heart to release negative emotions while promoting creativity, peace and inner trust. It soothes and reduces anxiety and anger and is considered a natural depression remedy as it incredibly calms the heart and eases the mind.

Ylang Ylang is known to be one of the best aphrodisiacs in Aromatherapy. This could be because it relaxes tension and anxieties while balancing both male and female energies.

Create A Fragrant Home

unnamed (4)

A man went on a two week long vacation. While he was away from his apartment, his refrigerator stopped working and all of the food inside it including meats, eggs, and milk spoiled. When he arrived back he could not even enter the apartment as the rotten smell was just too unbearable. The manager of the complex sent the maintenance workers over right away to remove the refrigerator.  After they removed the refrigerator the apartment was still saturated with the rotten smell! So, they brought an ozone machine to treat the apartment, to permanently erase all odors. It is an effective treatment used to eliminate odors permanently in the apartment industry, hotels, and home rentals. The resident arrived after the treatment was completed and he said “It just doesn’t smell right.” Many people who have had their apartment treated with an ozone machine have mentioned that “it feels empty, like something is missing” because not only did the machine eliminate bad odors, but there is no presence of smell at all. It kind of gives humans a strange feeling because we are used to smelling something in the air. Having zero fragrance, of even something natural makes us feel uncomfortable. Usually the professionals who use such devices spray some type of synthetic air fresheners to bring a more familiar smell back. In this article we will discuss how you can bring back the natural aromas into your home!

Our sense of smell

The sense of smell is directly linked to our brain. Do you ever notice when you inhale a pleasant aroma your immediate response might just be “mmm”. Aromas are interpreted in our limbic system part of our brain which is our emotional center. It may link the smell to events, memories or feelings. Because the smell of Essential Oils travel up our nose directly to our receptors, it is very difficult to have no reaction to smell at all as it is one of our most powerful senses. Our immediate response might be a sigh or a sense of comfort and relaxation.

Your Home

What is the first impression guest perceive when they first enter your home? It is not the decorations or how you arranged your furniture. The first thing to receive your guest is the aroma. The aroma of your home is your personal signature and can vary person to person. Many who have incorporated Essential Oils to “bring the aroma back” have had great feedback from visitors such as “It smells good in here” or “It just feels tranquil or relaxing”.

You can change aromas as you desire. For example, in times of illness, you might diffuse Essential Oils that are antibacterial or antiviral. In the fall I like to use spice oils such as cinnamon, clove, ginger, allspice, etc. In my office I use Essential Oils that keep me alert and promote mental clarity such as Peppermint, Rosemary, Basil, Lime, Bergamot, Grapefruit, and lemon. The same concept can be used from room to room of your home, depending on what type of effect you would like to have. The Eternity Blends can be incorporated as well.

Below are some ideas for your Fragrant Home. Be creative as all of these recipes can be adapted to YOUR favorite Essential Oils!

Bedroom Aromas- Some Essential Oils to assist with rest, relaxation and romance include: Ylang Ylang, Lavender, Clary Sage, Patchouli, Palma Rosa, Chamomile, Cinnamon, Ginger, Orange, Geranium, Black Pepper, sandalwood, Ho-wood, and Rose.

Kitchen Aromas- In the kitchen are found many aromas, from fresh baked desserts, to odors that aren’t as pleasant to some such as fish or cabbage. This is usually due to poor ventilation where the air doesn’t circulate to clear away the unpleasant smell.

Clean Kitchen Blend- This can be used to wipe down surfaces. Use 2 drops of each of the oils below in 2 ½ cups of water. These oils help with disinfecting and have a pleasant aroma. Use as a room spray, or to wipe down surfaces or clean floors. (Always test a small portion of the surfaces before using an essential oil)

Other oils that can be used include: Tea Tree, Pine, Lime, Orange, Grapefruit, Rosemary, Thyme, Lemongrass, Palmarosa.

Bathroom Aromas – Make a bathroom spray that helps with unpleasant odors as well as have antibacterial properties. Use 15-20 drops of each in an aluminum spray bottle with 1/2 water and 1/2  witch hazel. Add Essential Oils and witch hazel first to bottle and shake. Then add water. Shake before using.

Living Room Aromas

Relaxing Diffuser Blend- Add 2 drops of each of the oils below to your diffuser.
